Separate damage and assessment entries

Read the event type, date and estimate range. An assessment is not a paid invoice, and amounts should not automatically be added together.

Pause if the VIN does not match

Resolve any difference between vehicle markings, documents and the report before paying a deposit. An empty report does not confirm that the car has never been damaged.

A practical check before travelling

Request a clear photo of the VIN on the car and the relevant documents, then arrange dates and mileage readings in order. Keep a budget for an independent inspection.

  1. Find the number on the vehicle

Some models show the VIN through the windscreen. A door-frame label or a stamped marking may be elsewhere; check the manufacturer’s manual for your model.

  2. Compare all 17 characters

Compare the marking with the vehicle documents and report. Do not confuse an engine code or a part number with the VIN.

  3. Resolve differences before paying

Do not scrape or alter markings. If a number is missing, hard to read or does not match, ask a specialist to verify the vehicle’s identity.

Which engine suits your use?

2.0 TDI

For long journeys, start by comparing single-turbo versions with clear history. ADAC highlights 150, 190 or 200 PS versions as a compromise.

TSI

For lower annual mileage, include petrol in your comparison. Calculate total cost rather than judging only quoted consumption or displacement.

DSG / 4Motion

Assess added comfort and traction alongside servicing. Have the gearbox and drivetrain identified by VIN.

Documented issues and inspection priorities

  • ADAC notes frequent high mileage; inspect brakes, suspension and possible oil leaks closely. Mileage alone does not determine condition. Source
  • Uneven DSG take-off is noted in the report. Repeat the test warm and request diagnosis if it persists. Source
  • DSG: verify servicing against the gearbox code and assess warm behaviour. Gearboxes do not all share the same construction or service plan. Source
  • TDI: check the emissions equipment actually fitted and any previous work. Faults or warnings need diagnosis, not deletion to facilitate a sale. Source
  • TSI and special versions: check history and servicing against the actual engine, gearbox and equipment. One version's reputation is not a diagnosis for another. Source
  • History and bodywork: document gaps, repainting or conflicting readings need clarification. A clean history report does not replace independent inspection. Source

A reported issue does not establish its frequency in Romania or mean every car is affected.

Separate engine servicing from transmission, drivetrain and optional suspension maintenance. Request a quote for each system.

Pre-purchase checklist

  1. Compare the vehicle VIN with the documents and request invoice history, not just a stamped service book.
  2. Request a cold start. Watch warning lights, idle, smoke and noises without revving a cold engine hard.
  3. Have all accessible modules scanned, including stored and pending faults. A clean scan alone does not prove the car is healthy.
  4. Arrange a road test and an independent lift inspection: brakes, tyres, leaks, corrosion and accident repairs.
  5. Ask the brand network to confirm applicable campaigns and completed work by VIN.
  6. Obtain an itemised written quote for findings and assess the purchase price together with these costs.
  7. Compare invoices against mileage and interior wear; ask about undocumented periods.
  8. Test the parking brake, climate control, sensors and every fitted suspension mode separately.
  9. Before viewing, request the VIN, engine and gearbox codes, origin and invoices. Do not infer DSG maintenance from gear count alone.
  10. Build a mileage timeline from invoices, inspections and available records; for an import request evidence covering its time abroad.
  11. Test DSG take-off, reverse and slow manoeuvres cold and warm. Investigate persistent judder rather than assuming a simple service will cure it.
  12. Request a lift inspection of suspension, brakes and leaks, then relate findings to road-test noises or vibration.
  13. On a TDI, read available DPF/EGR and SCR/AdBlue codes/data where fitted. A cleared memory is not a system assessment.
  14. On a TSI, ask about oil top-ups, repairs and coolant loss. Unexplained consumption or leaks need diagnosis.
  15. For 4Motion and DCC check version-specific equipment and maintenance; on a GTE add charging and competent battery checks without working on high-voltage circuits.
  16. Save the accessible-module scan before clearing, check applicable campaigns with the brand network and obtain quotes for confirmed defects before a deposit.

When to pause the purchase

Pause if the seller refuses independent inspection or cannot explain the history. Low oil pressure, overheating, fuel smells or severe noises need assessment before another road test.
