OBD examples for Volkswagen Passat B8, grouped by engine: misfires, mixture, turbo, EGR and DPF. Explanations and diagnostic checks.
An editorial selection of OBD examples, not a ranking of the most frequent failures: model-level incidence statistics are not available. Exact applicability depends on engine, year, equipment and controller. A code alone does not confirm a failed part.
Choose petrol for TSI or diesel for TDI and check the exact engine code. For GTE, this list does not cover the high-voltage system. DSG faults require a separate scan of the transmission controller.

Petrol / LPG / gas: a combustion misfire example.
P0300 identifies random or multiple-cylinder misfire without isolating one cylinder through this code alone. Monitoring may use crankshaft-speed variations to detect irregular combustion. Ignition, fuel delivery, air supply and engine mechanics can all be involved. Spark-plug and coil checks apply to spark-ignition engines, not automatically to diesels; examine the whole fault pattern before ordering parts.
Stop safely for a flashing engine light or severe shaking; do not keep driving to reproduce misfire.
Causes and full explanation →Petrol / LPG / gas: mixture control, bank 1.
P0171 means bank 1 fuel control has reached a correction limit associated with a lean condition. On closed-loop petrol systems, positive fuel trims indicate added fuel. The cause may be unmetered air, inadequate fuel delivery or feedback that falsely suggests lean operation. The code does not automatically condemn the oxygen sensor, and petrol fuel-trim rules should not be transferred unchanged to diesel strategies.
Save codes and freeze-frame data; establish whether bank 1 alone or both banks are affected.
Causes and full explanation →Petrol: catalyst-efficiency monitoring, bank 1.
P0420 means the bank 1 catalyst monitor assessed efficiency below its calibrated threshold. Many petrol systems evaluate upstream/downstream sensor response under specified temperature and load conditions. The code does not automatically require a downstream sensor or catalyst replacement. First exclude misfire, mixture faults and exhaust leaks; the monitoring strategy and valid test conditions depend on the engine and catalyst technology.
Address misfire, mixture and oxygen-sensor heater/signal faults first; retain freeze-frame data.
Causes and full explanation →Turbocharged engines only: petrol or diesel.
P0299 means boost did not reach the expected value under the monitored conditions. Air leaks, restrictions, turbo control and inaccurate measurement can cause the shortfall, so it is not automatically a turbocharger failure. Noise or an oil trace alone is not conclusive. Diagnose the air path and boost regulation before evaluating whether the turbo itself requires repair.
Inspect charge-air hoses and joints first; save codes and freeze-frame data before clearing.
Causes and full explanation →Diesel group in this guide: EGR system, where monitored this way by the ECU.
P0401 indicates EGR flow below the monitor's expectation. Depending on system design, the controller may infer flow from air mass, pressure, temperature or other feedback. A valve moving to its commanded position does not prove that enough exhaust gas is passing through the circuit. Assess actuation, sealing and flow restrictions separately before cleaning or replacing the EGR assembly.
Inspect accessible hoses and connectors before replacing the valve; save codes and freeze-frame data.
Causes and full explanation →Diesel fitted with a DPF; not synonymous with a blocked filter.
P2002 identifies particulate-filter efficiency below threshold on bank 1; it does not automatically mean a blocked DPF. Some systems use a downstream particulate-matter sensor, while others use different monitoring strategies. Filter damage, exhaust leaks and inaccurate measurement need to be distinguished. Soot loading, filter integrity and monitor operation are separate diagnostic questions, so forced regeneration is not an automatic remedy.
Identify the monitoring method and accompanying codes; distinguish P2002 from P2453 and P2463.
