Chips, protocols and adapters compared honestly, apps matched to makes and the clear limits of universal OBD diagnostics.
An ELM327 adapter reads standard OBD-II codes and live data on most cars sold in the EU (petrol from 2001, diesel from 2004), but it is not a workshop scan tool. Learn which chip matters, which app to pick, how to use it properly and which functions to avoid.
A cheap ELM327 adapter can read codes and live parameters on a great many cars, but it is a protocol interpreter, not a workshop tester. The difference between a useful diagnosis and wasted time lies in the adapter chip, the app you choose and the limits nobody mentions at the point of sale. This guide separates the three.
Original editorial schematic, illustrative only — not a real scan-tool screenshot and not a substitute for engine-specific procedures.
Buy an adapter that speaks your car's protocols, verify it with identification commands and use it for reading only until you know exactly what the app does. Coding, adaptations and forced regenerations do not belong on an unknown adapter.

The adapter, meaning the board with the chip, the OBD connector and a Bluetooth, USB or WiFi module, is the bridge between the app and the car. It has no screen, no guided procedures and no idea which engine you have.
The app decides what you see. Many free apps read only generic emissions modes, meaning standardised parameters, codes and snapshots. Modules such as ABS, airbag, automatic gearbox or comfort systems are readable only when the app knows the manufacturer commands and the adapter can carry the responses.

2. The chip, the version and the protocols that matter| Adapter type | What it covers well | Practical limit |
|---|---|---|
| USB with a dedicated chip | Laptop diagnostics, apps that need a stable serial port | Requires a computer; no use for a quick check in a car park |
| Classic Bluetooth | Android, generic and brand apps | Does not work with iOS apps that require BLE |
| Bluetooth LE | iPhone and modern Android | Some older apps do not recognise it |
| WiFi | iPhone, laptops, older apps | Sensitive to interference; can drop long sessions |
Over generic modes you can read stored and pending codes, the status of the warning lamp, a freeze-frame for some codes, standardised live parameters and, on many cars, the VIN and emissions monitor readiness. That is enough for a first orientation and to see whether a fault returns after clearing.
Do not expect manufacturer-specific values, ABS or airbag codes, mileage stored in modules or adaptation functions. Brand apps add those only for the makes they support, and only with a suitable adapter.

4. Apps: what is worth it for which make| App | Make or purpose | What it adds | What stays out of reach |
|---|---|---|---|
| Torque, Car Scanner | Generic, all makes | Live parameters, codes, logs | Service functions and modules that need extended access |
| Carista | VAG, BMW, Toyota and others | Customisations and extended reading on supported makes | Does not replace a workshop tester for complex work |
| BimmerCode, BimmerLink | BMW and Mini | Comfort coding and module diagnostics | Needs a compatible adapter and a backup before coding |
| FORScan | Ford, Mazda, Lincoln | Modules that communicate on additional channels | Requires an adapter with extra channels for full access |
| PyRen, EcuTweaker | Renault and Dacia | Extended reading and specific parameters | Needs the right interface; high risk when writing |
| VCDS, OBDeleven | VAG | Diagnostics and adaptations close to workshop level | Not ELM327 adapters; they use dedicated hardware |
The 16-pin port is usually under the dashboard on the driver's side; on some models it sits in the centre console or behind a cover. Look up the exact position for your model in the OBD port location guide.
Push the adapter firmly into the port. Connecting and disconnecting with the ignition off avoids needless communication faults being stored.
Switch the ignition on (the engine can stay off), then pair the adapter over Bluetooth or join the adapter's Wi-Fi network and select it in the app.
Read stored and pending codes plus the freeze-frame. Take screenshots before clearing anything.
With the engine running, watch engine temperature, fuel trims, oxygen sensors or pressures, depending on the problem you are investigating.
Look up each code in the OBDAuto catalogue: definition, symptoms, causes and recommended checks. A code points to a circuit or function, not automatically to the part to replace.
Clearing without a repair only hides the fault and resets the readiness monitors, which can lead to a failed inspection.
Warning: Do not use coding, adaptation or "hidden feature" functions on safety modules (ABS, airbag, immobiliser) with a cheap adapter. A dropped connection while writing can leave the module inoperative.
Do not leave the adapter in the port permanently: some models draw current and can flatten the battery within a few days of standing.

The adapter supports your car's protocols, including CAN or K-line Chip identification verified with an AT-style command The app explicitly supports your make and model year Report exported before clearing any code Testing done with the engine running, in a ventilated space No coding or adaptation performed on a weak battery Adapter unplugged after the sessionFor reading generic codes and parameters, often yes. For body modules, coding or service functions, no. The limit is not only price but the chip, the protocols and the app.
Can I find the real mileage with an ELM327?Very rarely. Some modules store partial distances, but they are not total mileage and are not read through generic modes. Treat any figure as an indication, not proof.
Why can the app not see the ABS module?Generic emissions modes do not include ABS. You need an app that knows the manufacturer commands and an adapter that can carry responses on that channel.
