Car losing power: causes and what to check

Power loss most often comes from the turbo, EGR, the particulate filter or fuel supply and frequently triggers limp mode. Learn which codes to look for first and how to compare requested and actual boost.

Reduced power can come from the engine or transmission. A protection mode is a response to a problem, not a diagnosis.

General guidance, not a confirmed diagnosis for a make. Provide the model, year, engine and when the symptom occurs.

Simplified operating schematic. It does not show exact component locations or installation procedures for a specific engine.

Possible causes

  • Filter, fuel supply or sensor problems.
  • Boost or exhaust system faults.
  • Where fitted: a loaded particulate filter; sometimes clutch or transmission faults.

What to check

  • Record whether it happens under acceleration, at a particular speed or after warming up.
  • Save dashboard messages and codes; request checks for the exact engine.
  • Note whether engine speed rises without a matching increase in road speed; this can help direct transmission checks.

Diagnostic steps, in order

  1. Step 1: Note the context

Does it happen suddenly under hard acceleration and recover after a restart (typical turbo), gradually (filters, DPF) or only when hot? Revs rising without speed: check the clutch or gearbox.

  2. Step 2: Read the codes

Most common: P0299 (low boost), P0234 (overboost), P0401 (EGR), P2002 (particulate filter). Save the freeze-frame before clearing.

  3. Step 3: Compare requested and actual boost

In live data, with a passenger reading the scan tool, actual boost should follow requested boost. The gap shows whether it is a leak, a control fault or stuck vanes.

Warning: The driver never reads the scan tool while driving. Test on an empty road with a passenger, within legal limits.

  4. Step 4: Check particulate filter loading

High differential pressure and soot mass explain lost power. Fix the cause first, then regenerate.

  5. Step 5: Check filters and fuel supply

The air filter, fuel filter and rail pressure (code P0087) can limit power with nothing wrong at the turbo.

If power loss affects safe driving, stop in a safe place and seek assistance.

The symptom alone does not establish a DTC or failed part. Save stored codes and scan data before clearing them.

OBD codes to investigate when actually reported

A symptom does not imply a code. Follow a link only when your scanner actually reports it.
