Diesel shaking at idle when cold: causes and checks

A diesel that shakes when cold and settles once warm usually has weak preheating, unbalanced injectors or uneven compression; sometimes just worn engine mounts. Learn how to tell them apart.

Cold-start vibration may result from irregular combustion, fuel delivery or engine mounts. Distinguish unstable RPM from vibration at steady RPM.

General guidance. Confirm make, model year and engine; the symptom does not prove a code.

General guide

Possible causes

  • Insufficient preheating or glow-plug faults in low temperatures.
  • Injection correction, fuel delivery or uneven compression.
  • Worn mounts transmitting vibration without combustion misfires.

What to check

  • Record outside temperature, vibration duration and whether it disappears warm.
  • Read codes before clearing and inspect engine-specific live data.
  • Have preheating, injection and mounts inspected according to symptoms.

Diagnostic steps, in order

  1. Step 1: Note the conditions

Outside temperature, how long the shaking lasts and whether it stops once warm. Vibration at steady revs points to the engine mounts.

  2. Step 2: Read the codes

P0380 and P0671 onwards show preheating; P0300 shows misfires. Save the codes before clearing.

  3. Step 3: Read injector corrections

With a warm engine at stable idle, per-cylinder corrections reveal an injector delivering too much or too little.

  4. Step 4: Check the glow plugs

A failed plug produces exactly this cold shaking on one cylinder. Measure them following the engine procedure.

  5. Step 5: Check compression and mounts

If injectors and preheating are fine, a compression test and an engine-mount inspection complete the diagnosis.

Stop safely if the engine shakes violently, stalls, produces heavy smoke or the engine light flashes.

These are candidate codes to investigate only if actually reported.
