Why is my car blowing black smoke? Diesel and petrol causes

Black smoke means too much fuel for the available air: a restricted intake, the air mass meter, the turbo, EGR or injectors. Learn which codes usually appear and in which order to check.

General guidance, not a confirmed diagnosis for a make. Provide the model, year, engine and when the symptom occurs.

General guide Editorial review: 16 October 2026 Intake airflow

Simplified operating schematic. It does not show exact component locations or installation procedures for a specific engine.

Possible causes

  • Restricted air filter or intake.
  • Injector or fuel-metering faults.
  • Engine sensor or control faults.

What to check

  • Record whether it occurs under acceleration, when cold or continuously.
  • Have the intake, filter and injection data checked for the exact engine.
  • Specify petrol or diesel and whether the smoke comes with a loss of power.

Diagnostic steps, in order

  1. Step 1: Note when it appears

Only under hard acceleration, when cold or all the time. On a diesel a short puff on sudden acceleration can be normal; dense continuous smoke is not.

  2. Step 2: Read codes and live data

Common codes: P0401 (EGR), P0299 (low boost), P0101 (air mass meter), P2002 (particulate filter). Compare air mass and requested versus actual boost.

  3. Step 3: Check the air filter and intake

A blocked filter or a cracked intercooler hose reduces available air. Inspect the clamps and look for oil on the hoses.

  4. Step 4: Check EGR and the air mass meter

An EGR valve stuck open or a dirty air mass meter produce exactly this symptom. Use the actuator test and idle air mass values.

  5. Step 5: Check the injectors

On a diesel, per-cylinder corrections and a leak-off test reveal an injector that sprays badly or drips.

Do not attempt to fix it through hard acceleration or forced regeneration without diagnosis.

The symptom alone does not establish a DTC or failed part. Save stored codes and scan data before clearing them.
