Why does the engine shake at idle? Causes and checks

An engine that shakes at idle usually has misfires (plugs, coils, injectors), unmetered air or a sensor misreporting. Learn how to tell misfires from a worn engine mount and which codes help.

Unstable speed or rough idling can involve ignition, fuel delivery or intake faults. Petrol and diesel checks differ.

Possible causes

  • On petrol engines: spark plug or ignition coil faults.
  • Incorrect injector operation.
  • Incorrect airflow or intake sensor faults.

What to check

  • Record whether it happens cold, warm or with electrical loads switched on.
  • Have fault codes, the intake and cylinder operation checked.
  • Distinguish fluctuating speed from vibration at steady speed; an engine mount can transmit vibration without causing combustion misfires.

Diagnostic steps, in order

  1. Step 1: Fluctuating revs or steady vibration?

If the rev needle hunts, the cause is combustion or intake. If revs are steady but the car vibrates, check the engine mounts.

  2. Step 2: Read codes and misfire counters

P0300 or P0301–P0304 show misfires, P0171 a lean mixture (often unmetered air), P0101 the air mass meter, P0016 timing. Watch the per-cylinder misfire counters.

  3. Step 3: Look for unmetered air

With the engine running, listen for hissing at vacuum and intake hoses. Strongly positive fuel trims at idle that fall at higher revs point to an air leak.

  4. Step 4: Check the ignition

On petrol engines, swap the coil of the misfiring cylinder and inspect the plugs.

  5. Step 5: Check the throttle body and air mass meter

A dirty throttle body or contaminated air mass meter cause unstable idle. Clean only with dedicated products and, where required, run the idle relearn from the scan tool.

If the engine shakes severely or stalls, stop safely and seek assistance.

The symptom alone does not establish a DTC or failed part. Save stored codes and scan data before clearing them.

OBD codes to investigate when actually reported

A symptom does not imply a code. Follow a link only when your scanner actually reports it.
