Check the VIN before buying

Separate damage and assessment entries

Read the event type, date and estimate range. An assessment is not a paid invoice, and amounts should not automatically be added together.

Pause if the VIN does not match

Resolve any difference between vehicle markings, documents and the report before paying a deposit. An empty report does not confirm that the car has never been damaged.

A practical check before travelling

Request a clear photo of the VIN on the car and the relevant documents, then arrange dates and mileage readings in order. Keep a budget for an independent inspection.

  1. Find the number on the vehicle

Some models show the VIN through the windscreen. A door-frame label or a stamped marking may be elsewhere; check the manufacturer’s manual for your model.

  2. Compare all 17 characters

Compare the marking with the vehicle documents and report. Do not confuse an engine code or a part number with the VIN.

  3. Resolve differences before paying

Do not scrape or alter markings. If a number is missing, hard to read or does not match, ask a specialist to verify the vehicle’s identity.

Which engine suits your use?

1.4 Turbo 125 / 150 PS

For mixed use, compare these versions with good histories. ADAC notes their performance/consumption balance.

1.6 CDTI

For long journeys, scrutinise service history and cold starts. Do not treat it as identical to the later 1.5 diesel.

2019-on engines

Identify the exact engine rather than relying on advertised displacement. This guide does not rank every later version as better or worse.

Documented issues and inspection priorities

  • ADAC lists oil-wet drivetrain components and steering-joint faults as inspection points. Source
  • HELLA documents difficult starting on the 2019 Astra K 1.4 Turbo B14XFT. This case does not automatically apply to every 1.4 engine. Source

A reported issue does not establish its frequency in Romania or mean every car is affected.

Costs: published Romanian examples

Prices checked on 17 October 2026. These are individual examples, not market averages or guaranteed quotes for your car. Confirm by VIN, location and package contents.

B16DTE / B16DTH / B16DTU service kit

763 RON

5 L oil, air/fuel/cabin/oil filters and drain-plug seal. Product kit; labour is not included in the listing.

VAT: confirm with the supplier; the cited source does not explicitly specify it. Source

Do not extrapolate the diesel-kit price to turbo petrol. Request separate quotes for starting diagnosis, timing-system work or steering faults.

Pre-purchase checklist

  1. Compare the vehicle VIN with the documents and request invoice history, not just a stamped service book.
  2. Request a cold start. Watch warning lights, idle, smoke and noises without revving a cold engine hard.
  3. Have all accessible modules scanned, including stored and pending faults. A clean scan alone does not prove the car is healthy.
  4. Arrange a road test and an independent lift inspection: brakes, tyres, leaks, corrosion and accident repairs.
  5. Ask the brand network to confirm applicable campaigns and completed work by VIN.
  6. Obtain an itemised written quote for findings and assess the purchase price together with these costs.
  7. Request the first start of the day and assessment of any metallic noise; do not accept “they all do that” without inspection.
  8. Test climate control, display and lights; get a quote for any non-working equipment.

When to pause the purchase

Pause if the seller refuses independent inspection or cannot explain the history. Low oil pressure, overheating, fuel smells or severe noises need assessment before another road test.
