DPF regeneration guide: warning lights and diagnosis

A diesel particulate filter traps soot; regeneration can burn it under manufacturer-defined conditions. A warning alone does not prove that replacement is needed.

General guide Editorial review: 27 October 2026

Do not initiate forced regeneration without diagnosis and the correct procedure. Stop safely for severe warnings, smoke or abnormal running.

1. What regeneration does

  1. Regeneration burns accumulated soot when system conditions are met; repeated short trips may interrupt it.
  2. Ash buildup or sensor and engine faults are not necessarily resolved by regeneration.

2. When a warning appears

  1. Consult the exact handbook and identify all active warnings. The linked Volkswagen instructions are model-specific, not universal.
  2. If several warning lamps or severe symptoms appear, seek assistance and diagnosis. Never break traffic rules to attempt regeneration.

3. Diagnosis and costs

  1. A workshop can check regeneration history, pressure, temperatures, sensors and engine condition using the manufacturer procedure.
  2. Request separate diagnostic, cleaning or replacement quotes only after identifying the cause. Costs depend on the car and operation.
  3. Save codes before clearing. Do not disable emissions systems.
