When to replace the timing belt or chain: intervals and costs

The timing system synchronises the crankshaft and camshafts. Dry belts, chains and belts running in oil have different requirements; identify the engine before choosing an interval or kit.

There is no safe rule such as “all cars at 100,000 km”. Obtain the current VIN-specific schedule and proof of the last replacement.

2. Establish the replacement date

A quiet belt is not proof of good condition. A chain does not automatically share another engine's interval. Unusual start-up noise warrants prompt assessment.

Identify the VIN and engine code, not just model and year.
Obtain the current maintenance schedule and any engine-specific instructions.
Check the last invoice for date, mileage and parts. An under-bonnet label is only a clue.
Where time and mileage limits apply, do not exceed the first reached. If history cannot be confirmed, obtain an assessment and plan before assuming replacement can wait.

3. Define the complete job

Ask for the kit, pulleys, tensioners and required fasteners to be identified. If the timing belt drives the water pump, include assessment and replacement according to the applicable procedure. Compare quotes for the same complete job.

For a belt in oil, confirm special operations and manufacturer-required checks. Chain access and affected parts can change the cost substantially. Timing work requires application-specific locking tools and procedures.

4. Separate labour from parts

Domauto, Bucharest examples checked on 17 October 2026: Logan 1.4/1.6 petrol — RON 300; Logan 1.5 diesel — RON 350. These are VAT-inclusive labour tariffs, not total prices or rates covering every generation and engine.

The final quote needs the correct kit, associated parts, required fluids and VIN-confirmed labour. Chains and wet-belt systems need individual quotes; these examples are not comparable.

5. When diagnosis cannot wait

Stop safely if an oil-pressure warning or severe mechanical noise occurs. Avoid repeated starting attempts where displaced timing is suspected.

A crankshaft/camshaft correlation code starts an investigation; it does not automatically justify buying a timing kit. Diagnosis must establish the actual fault.
