Other maintenance work: brakes, transmission, cooling and costs

An oil service does not cover every maintenance task. Separate scheduled work, parts replaced after measurements and faults requiring diagnosis.

General guide Editorial review: 17 October 2026

Budget using findings and quotations. Braking faults, substantial leaks and pressure or temperature warnings take priority over comfort work.

Brake disc and caliper — an example of maintenance work

1. Brakes: wear and fluid

For pads and discs, request measurements against the applicable component limits. Mileage alone does not determine replacement. The workshop should also assess calipers, hoses and system operation.

Brake fluid has a time limit too. Brembo gives a general 2–3-year guide, with manufacturer instructions taking priority. An abnormal pedal or reduced braking calls for stopping safely and assistance.

2. Automatic transmission, driveline and clutch

Identify the exact transmission: torque converter, dual clutch, CVT or another type. Do not borrow a different system's interval or fluid. Ask about the applicable procedure, quantity, filter/pan and level setting.

ZF stresses manufacturer specifications and operating demands such as high temperatures, loads or unknown history. An oil change is not a guaranteed repair for slipping or harsh shifts. Diagnose before promising a cure.

3. Coolant and auxiliary belts

Choose coolant by specification, not colour alone. Confirm concentration, interval and bleeding procedure; matching colours do not prove compatibility.

Repeated losses need investigation. Do not open a hot expansion tank. The auxiliary belt is distinct from engine timing: assess its belt, pulleys and tensioner separately under the engine's schedule.

4. Battery, spark plugs and air conditioning

  1. 12 V battery: request a condition and charging-system test before replacement. Confirm required AGM/EFB technology and registration/adaptation if the vehicle requires it.
  2. Spark plugs: follow the engine's interval and part specification. Misfires have other causes too; a code does not automatically prove bad plugs.
  3. Air conditioning: request performance and leak checks, refrigerant type and quantity. Recharging alone does not fix a leak.
  4. Suspension and steering: ask for the actual play or wear to be identified and whether alignment is required after the work.

5. Labour examples, not total prices

Domauto Bucharest examples checked on 17 October 2026, VAT included. Parts and fluids are extra; job difficulty can change the quote.

6. Build a maintenance budget

  1. List work due over the next 12 months by time and mileage.
  2. Obtain VIN-specific quotes including parts, labour, VAT and consumables.
  3. Separate confirmed work from a contingency for undiagnosed issues. A contingency is not a recommendation to replace everything.
  4. Divide planned spending by 12 for a monthly reserve. Purely arithmetic example: a chosen RON 3,600 budget means RON 300/month, not a universal estimate.
  5. Keep invoices and inspection findings for future maintenance and resale.

Frequently asked questions

Must everything be replaced at each service?

No. Some tasks are scheduled; others depend on wear or diagnosis.

Will an oil change definitely repair the transmission?

No. Transmission symptoms need diagnosis; maintenance does not guarantee repair.

Do these labour rates apply everywhere?

No. They are examples from one Bucharest workshop; obtain a local quote for your car.

Do you offer car maintenance services or consumables?
