Start with the vehicle number

Check the VIN before buying

Start with available technical details for free. The OBDAuto decoder does not provide accident, mileage, theft or service history.

Report examples, explained

Separate damage and assessment entries

Read the event type, date and estimate range. An assessment is not a paid invoice, and amounts should not automatically be added together.

Pause if the VIN does not match

Resolve any difference between vehicle markings, documents and the report before paying a deposit. An empty report does not confirm that the car has never been damaged.

A practical check before travelling

Request a clear photo of the VIN on the car and the relevant documents, then arrange dates and mileage readings in order. Keep a budget for an independent inspection.

Where to find and compare the VIN

  1. Find the number on the vehicle

Some models show the VIN through the windscreen. A door-frame label or a stamped marking may be elsewhere; check the manufacturer’s manual for your model.

  2. Compare all 17 characters

Compare the marking with the vehicle documents and report. Do not confuse an engine code or a part number with the VIN.

  3. Resolve differences before paying

Do not scrape or alter markings. If a number is missing, hard to read or does not match, ask a specialist to verify the vehicle’s identity.

Which engine suits your use?

1.4 / 1.5 TSI

For family and mixed use, these are worth comparing. ADAC considers them better suited than base versions when loaded.

1.6 / 2.0 TDI

For long journeys, choose based on individual condition and power needs. Test with a load representative of your use.

G-TEC

This uses compressed natural gas, not LPG. Check refuelling availability and system documentation before considering it.

Documented issues and inspection priorities

  • ADAC flags broken springs and lists water-pump and boost-control issues among reported points. Check the actual car’s symptoms. Source
  • The report notes occasional jerky DSG take-off. Request cold/warm testing and the history of the exact gearbox. Source

A reported issue does not establish its frequency in Romania or mean every car is affected.

Octavia III 1.6 TDI, 81 kW service kit

579.53 RON

5 L oil and oil/air/fuel/cabin filters. Products only; request labour separately.

VAT: confirm with the supplier; the cited source does not explicitly specify it. Source

A parts-kit price is not the final bill. Request a full quote for fitting, extra fluids and any gearbox or suspension work.

Pre-purchase checklist

  1. Compare the vehicle VIN with the documents and request invoice history, not just a stamped service book.
  2. Request a cold start. Watch warning lights, idle, smoke and noises without revving a cold engine hard.
  3. Have all accessible modules scanned, including stored and pending faults. A clean scan alone does not prove the car is healthy.
  4. Arrange a road test and an independent lift inspection: brakes, tyres, leaks, corrosion and accident repairs.
  5. Ask the brand network to confirm applicable campaigns and completed work by VIN.
  6. Obtain an itemised written quote for findings and assess the purchase price together with these costs.
  7. Inspect springs and dampers on a lift; locate noises over bumps before purchase.
  8. Check the boot floor and beneath carpets for water or repair traces.

When to pause the purchase

Pause if the seller refuses independent inspection or cannot explain the history. Low oil pressure, overheating, fuel smells or severe noises need assessment before another road test.
