Used BMW X5 E70 and F15: pre-purchase checks

Illustrative image: SUV inspection — illustrative image, not an identified X5 generation

E70 and F15 are different generations. Identify the vehicle and engine using the VIN and documents before applying any advice.

Separate damage and assessment entries

Read the event type, date and estimate range. An assessment is not a paid invoice, and amounts should not automatically be added together.

Pause if the VIN does not match

Resolve any difference between vehicle markings, documents and the report before paying a deposit. An empty report does not confirm that the car has never been damaged.

A practical check before travelling

Request a clear photo of the VIN on the car and the relevant documents, then arrange dates and mileage readings in order. Keep a budget for an independent inspection.

These are inspection points, not guaranteed defects. Check recalls by VIN and request vehicle-specific diagnosis.

Where to find and compare the VIN

  1. Find the number on the vehicle

Some models show the VIN through the windscreen. A door-frame label or a stamped marking may be elsewhere; check the manufacturer’s manual for your model.

  2. Compare all 17 characters

Compare the marking with the vehicle documents and report. Do not confuse an engine code or a part number with the VIN.

  3. Resolve differences before paying

Do not scrape or alter markings. If a number is missing, hard to read or does not match, ask a specialist to verify the vehicle’s identity.

1. Generation, history and recalls

  1. Confirm generation, year, engine and gearbox in the documents. Do not apply E70 advice blindly to an F15.
  2. Request service and repair invoices; check outstanding campaigns by VIN with BMW.

2. Body, cabin and cold start

  1. Compare panel gaps, paint measurements and tyre wear. Check for leaks and test electrical equipment.
  2. Listen at cold start and observe persistent smoke or leaks; establish the cause before pricing a repair.

3. Gearbox, xDrive and suspension

  1. Test shifting cold and warm and request the exact gearbox service history.
  2. On xDrive check tyre sizes and wear against specifications. Diagnose vibration rather than assuming one failed part.
  3. Have a workshop inspect suspension, brakes, leaks and play on a lift.

4. Diagnostics and budget

  1. Scan compatible modules and save codes before clearing. Investigate engine-specific symptoms.
  2. Request itemised quotes for confirmed work and compare with the asking price and valuation.
