A map of faults behind the zig-zag lamp, from rail pressure and the accelerator pedal to wiring worn by vibration.
The multifunction warning light on a Dacia dashboard signals a fault that has to be read with a scan tool, not a particular part. Learn the common causes on the Logan, Sandero and Duster, what to read and in which order, and when to stop immediately.
The multifunction warning lamp, the orange zig-zag symbol, is probably the most photographed dashboard light in a Dacia. It does not mean one single thing: the meaning depends on the model, the engine and how it illuminates. This guide gathers the common causes and the order worth checking them in, without turning a lamp into a diagnosis.
Original editorial schematic, illustrative only — not a real scan-tool screenshot and not a substitute for engine-specific procedures.
Read the codes before replacing any part, and note whether the lamp is steady or flashing. A red or flashing lamp while driving calls for stopping, not for postponing diagnosis.
On petrol engines, the orange lamp signals an engine management fault, often related to fuel delivery, ignition or electronics. On diesels, the same symbol is also used for preheating, and flashing while driving can have a manufacturer-specific meaning.
The owner's manual remains the authority for your model. Some versions also use the lamp for faults that do not stop the engine, others light it together with the oil pressure or temperature warning. Read the manual before interpreting.
Sources: Dacia — owner's manual, operating faults and warning lampsEngine bay wiring is a frequently cited cause on high-mileage cars. Vibration and rubbing can wear insulation near an engine mount or near the ECU, and symptoms appear over bumps or in turns. A lamp that switches on and off without other symptoms suggests a contact problem rather than a failed part.

2. A map of common causes on Logan, Sandero and Duster| System | Associated symptom | Codes to check |
|---|---|---|
| Rail pressure | Hard starting, power loss, limp mode | P0087, P0089, P0190 |
| Accelerator pedal sensor | Unstable idle, slow response, limp mode | P2120, P2135, P2138 |
| Brake switch | Lamp on with no other symptom, cruise control inactive | P0504, P0571 |
| Crankshaft sensor | Stalling while driving or difficult starting | P0335 |
| Throttle body | High idle, power loss when cold | P0638, P2100 |
| Wiring and connectors | Intermittent lamp, faults that come and go | multiple codes with no common logic |
Save stored and pending codes plus the freeze-frame before clearing anything.
Note the conditions in which the lamp appeared: at start-up, at idle, under load, over a bump.
Check battery voltage and terminal condition. Low voltage produces faults that stop recurring after charging.
Compare live values for the accelerator pedal and the brake switch. Their positions must agree with each other.
Visually inspect connectors and wiring routing in known chafing areas. Do not pull on wires or unplug modules with the ignition on.
Replace only the component that measurements show to be faulty: a sensor, a corroded connector or a broken wire. Do not replace parts on the code alone.
Clear the codes and drive in the same conditions in which the light appeared. If the light stays off and no pending codes return, the repair is confirmed.

Create the diagnostic PDF reportImport codes from a photoWith the ignition on, compare the two pedal signals. They should rise together, and if one jumps or stays fixed the problem lies with the sensor or its wiring. The same logic applies to the brake switch, which must clearly change state.
Check for water ingress around the engine bay fuse box. Moisture creates imperfect contacts that imitate sensor faults, and replacing the sensor fixes nothing.
Warning: Never open the coolant expansion tank cap when the engine is hot: pressurised coolant can spray out and cause serious burns. Check the level only with the engine cold.

A flashing lamp still deserves prompt attention because it usually signals an unstable contact.
Can I read Dacia codes with a generic scanner?Engine management codes, often yes. For additional modules and specific functions you need Renault-compatible equipment, used according to the documentation.
I replaced the sensor and the lamp came back. Why?The most common explanation is an unresolved cause: wiring, an oxidised connector or fuel pressure. Check the circuit, not only the part.
