How battery management works, what happens to an uncoded AGM battery and which procedure each platform requires.
On Start-Stop cars the ECU must know that the battery is new and what type and capacity it is; otherwise it charges it to the old battery's profile and shortens its life. Learn when registration is needed, how to do it step by step and which battery you can fit.
"I fitted a new battery and it works, so coding was not needed" describes the first week, not the battery's service life. Battery management systems learn the accumulator's parameters and adapt charging to them. When the battery is replaced without telling the system, the model stays on the old one. This guide explains what happens technically and what has to be done on each platform.

On vehicles requiring battery registration, it updates the BMS ageing model. Other vehicles have self-learning systems and do not need active registration; check the VIN-specific procedure. Changing battery type or capacity may require separate coding.
Car battery inspection; the photograph does not establish AGM/EFB technology Photo: Kwamitsey · CC BY 4.0 · Illustrative photograph; cropped and compressed to WebP.A sensor on the negative terminal measures current in and out, voltage and temperature. From that data the ECU estimates state of charge and state of health, meaning the remaining capacity percentage. On that basis it decides how aggressively the alternator may charge without overstressing the battery.
The system also controls heavy consumers: engine stop at traffic lights, regenerative braking, auxiliary heating. If the capacity estimate is wrong, those functions behave unpredictably even when the car starts normally.
The ECU does not measure battery capacity in real time. It infers it from a model that includes age, charge cycles and estimated internal resistance. A new battery has different internal resistance and accepts more current, but the old model still believes the accumulator is tired.
The result is a mismatched charging strategy: either voltage too high for a battery that is already full, or too low for a new one that stays undercharged. Both shorten service life and can produce start-stop or energy-recovery errors.

3. Why registration matters| Situation | What the system assumes without registration | Possible effect |
|---|---|---|
| New battery, same technology and capacity | That the old battery is still fitted | Charging matched to a worn accumulator |
| AGM replacing a conventional flooded lead-acid battery | A lead-acid charging profile | Wrong voltage, shortened life |
| Capacity larger than the coded value | That the battery has the old capacity | Incorrect state-of-charge estimates |
The car starts, and for the first weeks nothing is noticeable. That is why the forum argument seems to favour those who did not code. The difference appears over time: the battery is held at too high a float voltage, warms up, loses water if it has caps or ages prematurely.
In other cases the effect is reversed: the system considers the new battery "too good" and reduces charging, leaving the accumulator at 70 to 80 percent. Start-stop disables itself and cold starts become laboured without the battery actually being faulty.
Sources: VARTA — battery technology and vehicle electrical systemsOn VAG vehicles the procedure is usually called battery replacement registration and is run from a scan tool on the network or energy management module. If technology or capacity changes, the coding values must be changed too, not just the replacement confirmed.
On BMW, the new battery registration function sits among the service procedures, and changing type or capacity requires coding on the management module. On Ford, the battery monitoring reset is done from a scan tool or through a command sequence, depending on the model. Many Dacia, Renault and PSA models use a self-learning battery system; verify the procedure for the exact vehicle instead of assuming registration is mandatory.

5. How it is done, per platform| Platform | What is usually done | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| VAG | Replacement registration, plus coding if the type changes | A tester compatible with the energy management module |
| BMW, Mini | Registration and coding of type and capacity | A service app or tester |
| Ford | Battery monitoring reset | Tester or command sequence, depending on model |
| PSA, Renault | Procedure specific to the charging control unit | Documentation for the exact model |
Read the label for type (AGM or EFB), capacity (Ah) and cranking current. The new battery should be the same type with values as close as possible.
Note the radio code if needed, switch every load off and, optionally, connect a memory saver.
Remove the negative terminal first, then the positive. When refitting, reverse the order: positive first, negative last.
Warning: Never touch the positive terminal and the body with a spanner at the same time: the short circuit causes sparks and burns. A battery can give off hydrogen, so no naked flames or smoking.
Tighten the hold-down clamp and, for batteries in the cabin or boot, reconnect the vent hose.
In the scan tool choose the battery registration or replacement function and enter type and capacity (on some makes, the serial number too). The procedure differs by platform.
Some cars need the electric windows (auto close), steering angle or clock relearned after disconnection.
Check charging voltage in live data. Start-Stop may stay inactive for a few hours or days while the system learns the battery's state; this is normal.

New battery type and capacity clearly identified Resting voltage measured before fitting Replacement registered if the manufacturer requires it Coding updated if technology or capacity changed Start-stop and energy recovery checked after a few cycles No voltage-related faults left in the modules Job documented with the values that were enteredIt starts and works in the short term. Where registration is required, missed registration may affect stop-start operation or battery wear; there is no universal timeframe. That is not evidence the procedure is pointless.
Must an identical battery of the same capacity be coded too?It depends on the platform. Some require only the replacement confirmation, others also require the values. Check the procedure for your exact model.
Can I register it with a cheap scan tool? Some brand apps allow it on supported models. If the procedure requires coding across several modules, you need a service tester.
