U0102: lost TCCM communication. Confirm equipment and inspect the network before suspecting transfer-case mechanical damage.
Meaning, symptoms, causes and checks
U0102 identifies missing communication with the transfer-case controller (TCCM). Establish that the selected vehicle is equipped with that controller before diagnosing it. This is a data-link fault; it does not by itself confirm worn transfer-case gears or a failed actuator.
Affected system: Control-module communication
Symptoms
- Four-wheel-drive or transfer-case warnings may accompany the communication fault.
- A module scan may show the TCCM unavailable, with other network codes.
Possible causes
- An interruption in TCCM electrical supply, ground or its network connection.
- Damaged wiring, poor terminal retention, corrosion or water ingress at the relevant connectors.
What to check
- Confirm drivetrain equipment and the correct TCCM identity in the vehicle documentation.
- Save a full scan and attempt direct TCCM access. If it responds, read its own faults before suspecting a mechanical transfer-case problem.
- If only the TCCM is absent, inspect its specified supply/ground and branch; if several modules are absent, localise the shared path first.
- Have wiring and connectors inspected against the exact diagram. GM 08-07-30-021G illustrates shared-network causes only for its listed vehicles.
- After correcting the confirmed fault, repeat module communication and the prescribed transfer-case functional check; do not force an engagement with active faults.
