VIN scanner from a photo
Photograph the VIN plate under the windscreen, the door-jamb label or the number in the registration document. We read the barcode and the printed characters, then decode the 17-character VIN.
Where to find the VIN
- Windscreen, lower corner on the driver’s side, visible from outside.
- The label on the driver’s door jamb, usually with a barcode.
- Registration document, vehicle title, insurance certificate.
- Motorcycles and trailers: stamped on the frame or a metal plate.
What the 17 characters contain
- 1–3 manufacturer and country of origin (WMI).
- 4–8 model, body and engine, coded by the manufacturer.
- 9 check digit, required in North America.
- 10 model year, 11 plant, 12–17 serial number.
Scanning alone does not prove the number is genuine. Check the physical stamping too, not only the label.
Photograph the VIN on the registration document or vehicle. Optical character recognition (OCR) helps read it; verify the number before decoding.
Vehicle reports
Turn the scan into a vehicle report
What you scanned here is filled in automatically in the report form: the codes read, the VIN and the vehicle details. Pick the type that fits, the rest stays on your phone and leaves as a PDF.
