P2509 — ECM / PCM Power Input Signal Intermittent

P2509: ECM / PCM Power Input Signal Intermittent — what it means, the affected system and what to check before replacing parts.

Meaning, symptoms, causes and checks

ECM/PCM power input: The response is intermittent or unstable; a normal reading at another moment does not exclude the recorded condition. This concerns the engine/powertrain controller supply input, not the TCM supply named by P0880–P0884. A supply-monitor code does not on its own establish a defective controller.

Affected system: Engine/powertrain controller electrical supply

Symptoms

  • An engine warning may appear even when the engine otherwise runs normally.
  • Starting difficulties, intermittent stalling or additional electrical warnings may occur when controller power drops.

Possible causes

  • Battery or cable connections that are loose, corroded or unable to maintain a stable supply.
  • Intermittent faults in ECM/PCM power feeds or ground wiring, including related fuses or relays.
  • An internal controller defect is possible only after external supply problems are excluded.

What to check

  • Confirm P2509 and preserve any accompanying codes and the conditions when the fault appeared.
  • Inspect battery condition, terminal tightness and corrosion; then check the controller's fuses and power relay.
  • Use the vehicle wiring diagram to test ECM/PCM feed and ground connections for intermittent loss or voltage drop.
  • Consider the controller only after the power and ground circuits have been checked.
