P2269: Water in Fuel Condition — what it means, the affected system and what to check before replacing parts.
Meaning, symptoms, causes and checks
Water in the fuel is reported by the monitoring system. This differs from a water-sensor electrical-circuit code. The indication must be checked against the actual fuel condition and sensor information; the code does not establish which fuel-system parts need replacement.
Affected system: Fuel contamination sensing
Symptoms
- A water-in-fuel warning can appear on equipped vehicles.
- If fuel is contaminated, the engine may hesitate or lose power.
Possible causes
- Water in the fuel or collected in the filter or separator may trigger the warning.
- A faulty water-detection sensor or damaged wiring can also produce an incorrect signal.
What to check
- Confirm P2269 and any accompanying warning or codes.
- Check the filter or separator for water using the vehicle's specified sampling procedure.
- If fuel appears clean, test the water sensor and inspect its wiring before replacing parts.
