P0727: Engine Speed Input Circuit No Signal — what it means, the affected system and what to check before replacing parts.
Meaning, symptoms, causes and checks
Engine Speed Input Circuit No Signal. Basic catalogue definition; diagnostic details have not yet been reviewed.
Affected system: Powertrain
Symptoms
- A transmission or engine warning may appear with harsh or poorly timed shifts.
- The gearbox may limit operation if it cannot obtain an engine-speed input.
Possible causes
- The engine-speed signal required by the receiving controller may be absent because a sensor or its wiring has failed.
- Loose or corroded connections, broken signal wiring or an upstream module problem can interrupt the RPM information.
What to check
- Read P0727 and related communication or speed-sensor codes and identify the source of RPM data for this transmission.
- Check relevant power, ground, wiring and connectors for the engine-speed information path.
- Monitor RPM data in the affected modules and test the sensor or communication link per the vehicle's service information; do not assume the transmission itself has failed.
