P0650 — Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) control — circuit fault

P0650: Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) control — circuit fault — what it means, the affected system and what to check before replacing parts.

Meaning, symptoms, causes and checks

The monitor for malfunction indicator lamp (mil) control reports a problem in the named circuit; an open, short or particular failed part is not established by the label alone. The output circuit is not the same as the original sensor input. A warning-lamp circuit fault alone does not confirm the physical condition represented by that lamp.

Affected system: Instrument and warning-signal outputs

Symptoms

  • Engine warning lamp fails to illuminate or operates intermittently.

Possible causes

  • Faulty MIL lamp/circuit, corroded connectors or blown fuse.

What to check

  • Check indicator, fuses and circuit between controller and instrument cluster.
