P0502 — Vehicle speed sensor — electrical input low

P0502: Vehicle speed sensor — electrical input low — what it means, the affected system and what to check before replacing parts.

Meaning, symptoms, causes and checks

P0502 reports a vehicle-speed input or sensor circuit classified as too low by the controller. It is not a statement that the car was moving too slowly. The speed signal may originate from a dedicated transmission/output-speed sensor or be derived from ABS wheel sensors and communicated between modules; the circuit and exact monitoring criteria depend on the vehicle.

Affected system: Vehicle speed signal

Symptoms

  • Speedometer may show zero or an implausibly low value while moving.
  • Cruise control or vehicle-speed-dependent functions may become unavailable.
  • Automatic transmission shift quality or ABS/stability functions may be affected where they depend on the same data.

Possible causes

  • Open, shorted or poorly connected signal/supply/ground circuit of a dedicated VSS, where fitted.
  • Sensor fault, contamination, damaged pulse wheel/encoder or excess bearing play affecting its signal.
  • Invalid wheel-speed information from an ABS sensor/module when vehicle speed is derived from ABS.
  • Lost or inconsistent communication between control modules, where vehicle speed is received over the network.

What to check

  • 1. Save all DTCs and freeze-frame data from engine, transmission and ABS/stability modules; note whether the symptom occurs only while moving.
  • 2. Use the exact wiring/service diagram to identify the VSS source: dedicated gearbox/transfer-case sensor versus ABS-derived signal. Do not assume there is a standalone VSS.
  • 3. In a controlled, safe test, compare vehicle-speed live data in relevant modules and individual wheel-speed readings when available. Zero at standstill alone is normal.
  • 4. Inspect the actual signal path: connectors, corrosion, cable damage, sensor seating and pulse/encoder ring; check wheel-bearing play if indicated.
  • 5. For a dedicated sensor, a qualified technician verifies supply, ground and waveform against OEM data. Active and passive sensor tests differ; do not resistance-test an active sensor.
  • 6. If ABS supplies vehicle speed, evaluate wheel sensor live data, ABS power/fuses and relevant communication codes before replacing engine or gearbox parts.
  • 7. Repair only the proven fault, then perform an appropriate safe speed-data verification and rescan all affected modules. Do not road-test if speed indication/brake systems are unsafe.
