P0497: EVAP System Low Purge Flow — what it means, the affected system and what to check before replacing parts.
Meaning, symptoms, causes and checks
EVAP System Low Purge Flow. Basic catalogue definition; diagnostic details have not yet been reviewed.
Affected system: Powertrain
Symptoms
- The malfunction indicator may illuminate; the fault does not necessarily produce an obvious driving symptom.
- The engine warning light may be accompanied by fuel-vapor odor or uneven idle, but these are not universal.
Possible causes
- A sticking purge valve or restricted EVAP canister/pipe may limit flow.
- A pressure-feedback sensor or purge-control connection may produce misleading flow readings.
- A wiring or connector defect should be excluded before a costly component replacement.
What to check
- Read P0497 and related faults; retain freeze-frame information.
- Inspect EVAP purge hoses for crushing, disconnection or blockage and check the purge valve.
- Command the purge circuit with a suitable tester and evaluate the expected flow/pressure change.
- Correct only the confirmed defect, then verify the result under the maker's specified conditions.
