P0496 — EVAP System High Purge Flow

P0496: EVAP System High Purge Flow — what it means, the affected system and what to check before replacing parts.

Meaning, symptoms, causes and checks

P0496 indicates excessive EVAP purge flow or flow detected when purge is not expected. A valve that fails to close can admit uncontrolled vapor/air to the intake. This is not automatically a fuel-tank leak; diagnose purge command and pressure response using the exact vehicle procedure.

Affected system: EVAP purge-flow control

Symptoms

  • Engine warning lamp, sometimes with no other symptoms.
  • Rough idle, hesitation or stalling if unwanted purge disturbs the mixture.
  • On some vehicles, difficult starts after refuelling; this symptom alone does not confirm P0496.

Possible causes

  • EVAP purge valve mechanically stuck open or leaking when it should seal.
  • Incorrect electrical command or damaged wiring/connectors.
  • Misrouted/damaged hoses or implausible fuel-tank pressure feedback, only when confirmed by testing.

What to check

  • 1. Capture DTCs and freeze frame, including P0441/P0442/P0455 or mixture faults, then identify the exact engine's EVAP design.
  • 2. Inspect purge valve, vapor hoses and connectors for damage or incorrect routing. Keep ignition sources away and never improvise a smoke tester.
  • 3. Review purge command and fuel-tank pressure on live data where supported. A pressure reaction while purge is commanded closed suggests unwanted flow or faulty feedback, but not a proven bad part.
  • 4. Following the OEM procedure, check whether the purge path seals when commanded closed. Vacuum/flow with electrical command absent supports a stuck/leaking purge valve.
  • 5. If supported, command the valve open/closed and compare physical actuation and pressure response. No response may indicate the valve, wiring, blockage or feedback fault.
  • 6. If electrically energized unexpectedly, diagnose supply/return/driver using OEM pinout; do not apply power to unidentified pins or interpret PWM as constant voltage.
  • 7. Correct only the demonstrated defect, clear codes and confirm the monitor under OEM conditions. Avoid driving if the engine repeatedly stalls. GM coverage N232395300 is model/year/VIN-specific.
