P0316 — Misfire on startup, first 1,000 revolutions

P0316: Misfire on startup, first 1,000 revolutions.

Meaning, symptoms, causes and checks

P0316 records misfire during the first 1,000 engine revolutions after startup, not at 1,000 rpm. It does not identify a cylinder or cause by itself. Reproduce the original start and use associated P030x codes to direct testing.

Affected system: Powertrain

Symptoms

  • Rough running immediately after starting, sometimes clearing later.
  • Steady/flashing engine lamp; possible hard starting or unburned-fuel smell.

Possible causes

  • Weak ignition on spark-ignition engines or incorrect injector delivery.
  • Fuel supply, mixture or compression problems at startup; position signals can affect monitoring.

What to check

  • Record temperature, soak time, freeze-frame and P030x codes before clearing.
  • Monitor misfire counters during a comparable start and identify affected cylinders.
  • Check battery/cranking speed to specification and address related CKP/CMP/fuel codes.
  • On gasoline engines inspect plugs/coils/moisture; test injection and mixture as specified.
  • For repeated cold misfire on one cylinder, check sealing/compression; verify with another comparable start.
