P0297 — Vehicle overspeed condition

P0297: Vehicle overspeed condition — what it means, the affected system and what to check before replacing parts.

Meaning, symptoms, causes and checks

The monitor identifies vehicle speed above the calibrated overspeed condition. The code records a speed-related operating state and does not by itself identify a failed speed sensor or control module; the threshold, speed source, vehicle configuration and event context must be checked in the manufacturer’s information.

Affected system: Vehicle-speed monitoring

Symptoms

  • An engine warning light may illuminate; some vehicles may limit power following a recorded overspeed event.

Possible causes

  • The monitored speed may have exceeded the configured limit; wheel slip or an inaccurate speed signal can also affect the recorded value.

What to check

  • Review the event context, associated codes and available freeze-frame information; compare speed readings and inspect the relevant circuit only if the data are inconsistent.
