P0171 (Audi): Control module software needs to be updated, Vacuum leaks (intake… — what it means, the affected system and what to check before replacing parts.

Meaning, symptoms, causes and checks

System Too Lean (Bank 1) indicates that the engine has too much air and not enough fuel in the combustion mix, deviating past the ideal 14.7:1 air-fuel ratio.

Affected system: Powertrain

Possible causes

  • Stuck-open or ruptured PCV valve (oil separator / crankcase ventilation), very common on Audi 2.0T engines
  • Vacuum leaks: unmetered air through cracked hoses, intake manifold gaskets or broken components (cracked oil dipstick tube, loose O-ring)
  • Dirty, contaminated or failing mass air flow (MAF) sensor sending incorrect airflow data to the ECU
  • Fuel delivery issues: weak high-pressure fuel pump (HPFP), low fuel pressure or clogged injectors

What to check

  • Scan with a VAG-specific tool (e.g. Ross-Tech VCDS or OBDeleven) and check for related codes such as P2187 (too lean at idle) or P2279 (intake air leak)
  • Remove the oil filler cap with the engine running; strong suction or a change in idle points to a failed PCV valve
  • Inspect the oil dipstick and its rubber O-ring to make sure it is fully seated and not cracked
  • Inspect the MAF sensor element for debris or oil residue; clean or replace it
  • Verify low-side and high-side fuel rail pressure with a diagnostic scanner
