P0130 — Oxygen sensor circuit — bank 1, sensor 1

P0130: Oxygen sensor circuit — bank 1, sensor 1 — what it means, the affected system and what to check before replacing parts.

Meaning, symptoms, causes and checks

P0130 indicates a circuit fault affecting the upstream oxygen/air-fuel sensor (bank 1, sensor 1). It concerns the monitored input rather than proving a bad sensor or a truly rich/lean mixture. The sensor may be a narrowband zirconia, titania or wideband air-fuel design; interpret the signal for that exact engine.

Affected system: Mixture control

Symptoms

  • Engine warning lamp, sometimes increased fuel consumption or uneven running.
  • Fuel-mixture adaptation may be limited depending on ECU strategy.
  • Sensor data can be implausible, without automatically proving the sensor is faulty.

Possible causes

  • Damaged connector, terminals or wiring near hot exhaust components.
  • Signal, ground or reference-circuit fault depending on the sensor type.
  • Aged or contaminated sensor only after appropriate testing.
  • Exhaust leaks upstream or genuine mixture faults that may distort the signal; distinguish from electrical failures.

What to check

  • 1. Save DTCs and freeze-frame; assess P0131/P0132, heater codes such as P0135 and mixture faults that may change diagnostic priority.
  • 2. Use the engine diagram to identify bank 1 upstream sensor 1; do not confuse it with the post-catalyst sensor or another bank.
  • 3. Inspect connector, insulation and harness routing and check for exhaust leaks ahead of the sensor. Avoid hot exhaust components.
  • 4. Identify sensor technology (narrowband zirconia, titania or wideband A/F) and the correct data PIDs. The 0.1–0.9 V narrowband interpretation is not universal.
  • 5. Under manufacturer-specified operating conditions, observe sensor signal/lambda equivalence, response to mixture changes and fuel trims. Poor response requires distinguishing circuit, sensor and mixture faults.
  • 6. Test supply, ground, reference and continuity using the OEM pinout. Do not resistance-test active electronic circuits without the proper isolation and procedure.
  • 7. If the electrical signal is sound, investigate intake/exhaust leaks, fuel delivery and related codes before replacement; repair the proven fault and retest for P0130 under the original conditions.
