P0054 — Oxygen sensor heater resistance — bank 1, sensor 2

P0054: oxygen sensor heater resistance, bank 1, sensor 2. Meaning, possible causes and checks before replacement.

Meaning, symptoms, causes and checks

P0054 indicates incorrect heater resistance or electrical behavior for bank 1, sensor 2. Sensor 2 is usually after the first catalyst; some exhaust layouts also have sensor 3. The monitor may use heater current; the code does not specify a universal resistance in ohms. Supply wiring and heater control strategies differ between vehicles.

Affected system: Powertrain

Symptoms

  • Engine warning lamp and a stored code.
  • The vehicle may drive normally while emissions monitoring remains incomplete.

Possible causes

  • Open or degraded heater element, or a sensor with the wrong specification.
  • Additional connection resistance or inadequate supply.

What to check

  • Confirm B1S2 in the engine diagram and save related codes and freeze-frame data before clearing anything.
  • With the exhaust cold, inspect the B1S2 harness for melted insulation, rubbing, water in the connector and loose terminals.
  • Measure the disconnected cold heater at the identified pins; compare resistance with the specified temperature and exact part specification.
  • Check loaded supply and starting current; correct cold resistance alone does not establish that the heater operates properly.
  • After correcting the confirmed fault, repeat the OEM monitor conditions and check for code recurrence, beyond merely extinguishing the lamp.
