P0022 — Camshaft A intake timing over-retarded, bank 2

P0022: Camshaft A intake timing over-retarded, bank 2.

Meaning, symptoms, causes and checks

P0022 reports bank 2 intake camshaft A timing too retarded relative to the expected position. This timing-monitor result does not itself diagnose a stretched chain; criteria depend on the engine.

Affected system: Powertrain

Symptoms

  • Check-engine lamp, sometimes without obvious running changes.
  • Possible hard starting, uneven idle, hesitation or reduced power.

Possible causes

  • Incorrect oil level, condition or specification; restricted hydraulic supply.
  • Sticking solenoid, phaser that fails to return or incorrect base timing; also verify position feedback.

What to check

  • Record freeze-frame and oil-pressure, VVT-circuit and correlation codes; address faults that invalidate testing first.
  • Check oil level/specification, service history and recent timing work.
  • Identify bank 2 intake cam A; compare commanded and actual angles under OEM test conditions.
  • Run the approved solenoid test and observe phaser response and return.
  • If deviation persists, check oil supply and base timing using OEM procedures; prove the cause before replacing parts.
