Used Audi A4 B9: how to check mileage and accident history

Pictured: Audi A4 B9

An Audi A4 B9 advertised with low mileage may still have gaps in its history. Compare the VIN, dated readings and documents, then inspect the car before paying.

Start with the vehicle number

Start with available technical details for free. The OBDAuto decoder does not provide accident, mileage, theft or service history.

Separate damage and assessment entries

Read the event type, date and estimate range. An assessment is not a paid invoice, and amounts should not automatically be added together.

Pause if the VIN does not match

Resolve any difference between vehicle markings, documents and the report before paying a deposit. An empty report does not confirm that the car has never been damaged.

A practical check before travelling

Request a clear photo of the VIN on the car and the relevant documents, then arrange dates and mileage readings in order. Keep a budget for an independent inspection.

There is no magic reading that guarantees 'genuine mileage'. Compare independent documents, available Audi-network records and the physical inspection.

Where to find and compare the VIN

  1. Find the number on the vehicle

Some models show the VIN through the windscreen. A door-frame label or a stamped marking may be elsewhere; check the manufacturer’s manual for your model.

  2. Compare all 17 characters

Compare the marking with the vehicle documents and report. Do not confuse an engine code or a part number with the VIN.

  3. Resolve differences before paying

Do not scrape or alter markings. If a number is missing, hard to read or does not match, ask a specialist to verify the vehicle’s identity.

1. Build a timeline before reaching a verdict

Fictional example: an invoice showing 182,000 km in 2022 and an advertisement showing 139,000 km in 2025 conflict. A recording error or documented instrument replacement needs evidence; this example is not an actual vehicle history.

  1. For each entry record date, VIN, mileage, km/mile units and issuer. Use original invoices and inspections, not just a seller's transcription.
  2. Use the official RAR Auto-Pass source and request records from the country of origin. Coverage varies; an undocumented period does not establish low mileage.
  3. If readings conflict, check the original document and unit first, then ask the issuer to clarify. Do not arbitrarily amend a value to fit the advertisement.

2. Audi digital records versus what the MMI shows

Audi describes an online service record accessible through its service centres. With the owner's cooperation, request confirmation of available VIN-linked entries and supporting invoices. Confirm local access arrangements for a prospective buyer.

An upcoming-service display is not a complete history. Compare dates, mileage and operations against invoices; work outside the network may need other evidence.

3. Damage: reconcile the report with the actual car

Interpret paint readings against panel material and location, not a universal micron threshold. Structural members, joints and restraint systems require a competent inspection.

4. Inspection priorities before negotiating

  1. ADAC notes occasional B9 suspension and spring/damper issues. Request a lift inspection and an appropriate road test; good overall reliability does not certify this car.
  2. Identify the exact engine and gearbox. Check transmission servicing for the installed unit; the S tronic name does not establish one universal service interval.
  3. Request a scan of accessible modules and save the report before clearing. Different internal readings need investigation; they are neither a mileage certificate nor an automatic fraud verdict.
  4. Base your offer on confirmed work and unresolved evidence. Do not invent a fixed percentage discount for every missing record.

0 / 6 checks completed

I have a dated VIN/mileage timeline, not only screenshots. I checked Romanian records and import documents. The owner cooperated with checking available Audi history. Conflicts and any replaced instruments are documented. Bodywork, structure and safety systems were inspected. I have a diagnostic report and quotes for confirmed defects.

Frequently asked questions

Can the MMI prove genuine mileage?

Not alone. Compare the display and service reminders with documents and independent records.

Does a clean A4 B9 history report mean no accidents?

No. Repairs may never reach the consulted databases. Body and structural inspections are still necessary.

Does any difference between module readings prove rollback?

No. It depends on what each module records and any documented replacements. Ask a specialist to interpret it.
