BMW 3 Series F30/G20 buying guide: what can a VIN history check uncover?

Equipment and appearance do not tell a BMW’s whole story. Before paying a deposit, verify the VIN, F30/G20 generation and evidence of mileage, servicing and repairs.

Start with the vehicle number

Check the VIN before buying

Start with available technical details for free. The OBDAuto decoder does not provide accident, mileage, theft or service history.

Separate damage and assessment entries

Read the event type, date and estimate range. An assessment is not a paid invoice, and amounts should not automatically be added together.

Pause if the VIN does not match

Resolve any difference between vehicle markings, documents and the report before paying a deposit. An empty report does not confirm that the car has never been damaged.

A practical check before travelling

Request a clear photo of the VIN on the car and the relevant documents, then arrange dates and mileage readings in order. Keep a budget for an independent inspection.

Use the VIN for identity, campaigns and available records. Establish engine, transmission and body condition through inspection and diagnostics before paying a deposit.

  1. Find the number on the vehicle

Some models show the VIN through the windscreen. A door-frame label or a stamped marking may be elsewhere; check the manufacturer’s manual for your model.

  2. Compare all 17 characters

Compare the marking with the vehicle documents and report. Do not confuse an engine code or a part number with the VIN.

  3. Resolve differences before paying

Do not scrape or alter markings. If a number is missing, hard to read or does not match, ask a specialist to verify the vehicle’s identity.

1. What a VIN-based check can reveal

On a phone, scroll the table to see all columns.

1. What a VIN-based check can reveal
CheckWhat to look forWhat it cannot prove
Identity and equipmentCompare the VIN and documented specification with the car.A free decoder may have incomplete coverage; a missing field does not prove fraud.
BMW campaignsUse the official VIN lookup and ask the dealer to confirm repair status.A model-level campaign does not establish that this particular car is included.
Service and damage historyRequest available records and invoices with dates, VIN and mileage. The VIN alone does not provide access to every repair or accident.

2. F30 and G20 need different inspection plans

The ADAC F30 diesel report flags suspension, oil leaks and a timing-chain signal for selected registrations. These observations justify targeted checks, not a claim that every F30 has a failed chain. Do not automatically transfer them to G20.

  1. F30: request a cold start and workshop assessment of unusual noises. A timing invoice should identify the engine and parts, not merely say 'chain replaced'.
  2. G20: confirm any 48 V or plug-in equipment by VIN; do not confuse a mild hybrid with a 330e. Battery and charging checks differ.
  3. On both: inspect leaks and operation of climate control and electronics before and after the drive. Never open a hot coolant reservoir.

3. Diesel, xDrive and 330e: ask about the exact version

  1. Diesel: check applicable EGR campaigns and evidence of completed work. Interpret EGR/DPF faults with live data and usage; a code alone does not establish a replacement part.
  2. xDrive: compare tyre sizes and wear with the vehicle specification. Vibration or binding on an appropriate test drive needs drivetrain assessment; the VIN cannot diagnose the transfer case.
  3. 330e: test charging and request a competent traction-battery assessment. Displayed range depends on conditions and is not a battery-health certificate.

4. How to challenge an unusually good sales story

  1. Build a timeline from invoices and dated readings; ask about gaps or contradictions. Missing data is a limitation, not proof of low usage.
  2. Use a BMW-capable scan across accessible modules. Save the report before clearing; an empty fault memory or incomplete monitors alone proves neither health nor fraud.
  3. Arrange an independent structural and safety-system inspection. If repairs are found, request photographs and records, then quotes for confirmed work.

The vehicle and document VINs match. Generation, engine and equipment are confirmed. I checked campaigns and service evidence. I have a timeline and diagnostic report. A cold-start check and independent inspection are complete. I have version-specific xDrive/330e checks and quotes.

Frequently asked questions

Does a BMW VIN check reveal every accident?

No. Available databases may reveal events, but unreported repairs can be missing. Physical inspection is still necessary.

Do F30 and G20 share the same timing-chain problems?

The 3 Series name is not enough to generalise. Identify the engine and build date, then check documentation and the individual car.

Does OBDAuto's decoder provide a full history?

No. It shows technical data available from its sources, not a replacement for service history, accident reports or an inspection.
